Yeah, I ran into the same issue as you. It's non-obvious how to get it working. Here's what you do: Press Ctrl-Shift-P. This will open a console. Start With A Starter Pack. It will be tempting to just go to the download link on the Dwarf Fortress website, grab the game and dig in. Don’t do this. Instead, download a starter pack.
