Pretty much any of the big retreats we went on in high school (and I went on Kairos again in college) have letters involved. Next year, I get to write one for my younger brother going on Kairos! I am so excited and thanks you Elizabeth for posting this! My daughter, Andrea and my niece, Mikaela. As my niece, Mikaela, finishes her retreat in school today, this is the right time to write her a letter expressing how wonderful a young lady she is and to encourage her to pursue a life meant to be lived to the fullest. My dear Mikaela, I still.
I remember getting these a zillion years ago. Don't worry so much. The letters were all things to the effect of we love you, we are proud of you, keep exploring your faith, etc. Does that help? Your friend shouldn't have to read anything out loud, and you can be humorous.
I can't say that it won't be proofread by the retreat coordinator but I think in total our retreat probably had 200+ letters opened that night so I doubt someone would take the time to sift through all of them. That said, I wouldn't mention something that could get your friend in trouble with his colleagues. If he's going on a retreat for work he may have some morality clause in his contract. So leave out the reminiscing about that fun time you guys smoked pot in college, etc.It was a very moving and memorable experience for me.

I'm glad you're helping make it one for your friend.
