Hi -I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro a couple of days ago. I've encountered a few quirks (getting 'locked out' from my email, no audio, etc.), but I've gotten everything figured out so far except this one thing (that I know of).I have an external hard drive - Fantom GFP2000Q3 Pro 2TB USB/eSata/Firewire - that was working perfectly with Windows 7. I had it attached to my laptop using the eSata port. After I upgraded to Windows10, however, it just was not recognized at all.
I discovered that it works fine when I plug it into the USB 3.0 port - Windows automatically recognizes it and it operates perfectly. When I plug it back into the eSata port though - nothing. I tried runningthe Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter, but Windows still did not even know it's plugged in when in the eSata port.I contacted Fantom, and they told me that these drives do not require any drivers with 'modern' operating systems - everything they need is built into the OS.I found one other posting here from someone else having the same issue, but his thread did not reveal anything helpful - his still isn't working either. I posted on his thread and am also starting anew one.
I apologize for the redundancy - just didn't know if my post would get seen there.Thank you for your help!- Amy Bass. Hi Amy,Please write to us with the following details.1) Are you able to connect other devices to your computer through the same USB port?2) What is the make and model of your computer?I suggest you to go to the manufacturer's website and download latestUSB Driver. After you are done with the download follow the steps given below.a) Press Windows key + X and selectDevice Manager.b) Search for USB Driver and expand it.c) Right click on the USB Driverand select Uninstall.Once you have successfully uninstalled the USB Driverthen install the downloaded USB Driverfrom the manufacturer's website. Let us know the status of the issue. Hello -Thank you for your reply. I'm afraid, though, that you missed my statement of the problem. I am having no trouble at all with my USB connection - in fact, the connection to the drive using my USB port works perfectly. The problem I am having is with connection to the external hard drive using myeSata port.I contacted the manufacturer about this and was told that there are no drivers, that 'modern' operating systems contain all the info needed to control the drive. To me, Windows 10 does not appear to be searching for something attached to theeSata port.
When I plug the drive into theUSB port, the OS quickly recognizes the drive, and it pops up with a 'what do you want to do with these files' window -no problem there. When I plug it into theeSata port - nothing at all happens. With Windows 7 (my previous OS), the drive is recognized in either port. I was using theeSata port previously, and I would like to continue using it (to free up my USB ports for other uses). So - stating the problem briefly. Windows 10 does not see my device when I plug it into theeSata port. How do I get Windows 10 to recognize an eSata device?Thank you,- Amy. I have a slightly different problem with a WD My Book Studio II external HDD system setup as Raid 1 connected to an eSata port. It connected and worked flawlessly under Windows 8.1, 8, 7 and earlier windows version.
Initially worked following upgradeto Windows 10 (August 2, 2015) but started to randomly drop off line starting in late August. The drive reconnects following a reboot but then eventually drops off; sometimes a day or so later and other times within minutes. One time the drive was not recognizedduring the reboot so switched the eSata port connection and the drive was recognized during the next reboot. The system event log has an entry ' The storage device produced an internal dump.'
Followed by ' An error was detected on deviceDeviceHarddisk1DR1 during a paging operation.' (DR1 is the external HDD connected to the eSata port) and ' Disk 1 has been surprise removed.' Running Windows 10 Pro 64bit on a ASUS P5N64WS motherboard. Also running an NVIDIA Raid 5 off themotherboard chipset. I have the same issue.
Fantom Greendrive worked fine over eSata on my PC running Win 7, not so with Win 10. MS pushed me onto ASUS, ASUS tried to tell me to buy a new external HDD. Drive works over firewire and USB, not eSATA. Very frustrating.Hi, My issue involved an IcyBox 3640 with an Asus motherboard. Changing the BIOS setting from IDE to AHCI solved the problem.
Note that AHCI will give better performance with SSD anyway. Note also, that you will have to google to find the correct setof steps to follow so that Windows 10 will boot correctly after changing the BIOS setting from IDE to AHCI. Since I posted this I discovered if I change the SATA mode in BIOS from AHCI to RAID, it works, almost the opposite of what you describe.
I arrived at this by plugging the Fantom into a different Win 7 PC which has only IDE and RAID modes, andwas set to RAID, and worked. So for now if I want a fast backup, I temporarily set the mode to RAID (this on a powerful ASUS motherboard), realizing that for everything else it's best to laeve the mode as AHCI. I may try reformatting and factory-resettingthe Fantom (make it like brand-new) to see if that lets it be seen as AHCI, which is after all what Fantom recommends.
Reps and Fantom, MS and ASUS have been surprisingly unhelpful, but at least this workaround gets the job done. I had a problem where I had attempted to use an external hard drive (Fantom 4TB) with an eSATA cable after I had been using the drive with a USB 2.0 cable. All of my drivers were up to date/installed. The drive showed up under disk management, but not infile manager. No drive letter assigned and all of the options under disk management greyed out/unusable.
Still works correctly using USB cable. It appears that using the drive via USB prevents it from being (later) used via eSATA without cleaning the disk, which is to say making it as if never used before. So, I first reconnected drive via USB to copy all files to another drive. Then I opened diskpart from a command prompt. Then entered 'list disk' to get list of HDDs in my PC (Note: 'List Volume' command will not show anything for the drive in question).Making sure I had correct disk, entered 'select disk 3', 3 being the external drive connected via USB at this point. Then entered 'clean disk.' Now you should see the drive in disk management screen as unallocated. Close programs and power off PC and external drive. Change cable to external drive from USB to eSATA.
Power on drive first and then PC. Open disk management again. You should see theexternal drive as unallocated and you can now add it back in as a simple volume same as if it were a new internal HDD.This problem is not explained very well and there are many un-necessary and wrong solutions floating around, some tied to programs you have to pay for that may or may not solve the problem. Apparently, the manufacturer of the external drive I have even chargesfor emailed support. Very poor way to handle customer service in my opinion. If drive works while connected via USB but not while connected via eSATA, try this method first before you waste your time with drivers, etc.
